Report on Purple Hibiscus and Guards, Guards

by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
and Sir Terry Pratchett

The club demonstrated mixed feelings about Guards, Guards. There was broader discussion around types of humour and its tremendous subjectivity. This resulted in a range of scores ranginf from 4-5 with one outlier at 7.

There was broader consensus on Purple Hibiscus -everyone liked it – with some discussion around the circumstances of Biafra and the Nigerian civil War. Questions about the fundamental character of the father and contradictions in his use of the newspaper for liberal agitation paid off for people all around. Also questions on whether the author felt guilty herself for having deserted her country to live in the US. The average rating was 7-8
