     1.    Did Confederation produce a tenable or even functional nation?
     2.    During the period between 1867 and 1914, how did the concept of Canadian             nationhood mature? Consider the visions expounded by those from particular             regions, ethnic origins and changes in the larger world economic order.
     3.    Is there a role for French-speaking Canada within the British Empire? What is the             alternative?

25 January World War One Letters by Bourassa, Article by Gwyn
    1. Did Canada owe a debt to Great Britain that would compel it to enter WWI?
    2. What is the 'Spiritual union of the self-governing portions of the Empire?"
    3. Why does Bourassa oppose conscription?
    4. In Gwyn's article, what can we learn about Canada's experience in the First World War?

1 February The Rise of Regionalism Articles by Wiseman and Forbes
     1. Do Class and Ethnicity Play similar roles in the development of regional political          movements in the Maritimes and the Prairies?
     2. To what extent are the political movements discussed in these articles products or          responses to the particular time in which they occur?

8 February The Depression Articles by Struthers and Johnston
     1. What factors can explain the Canadian government's failure to meet the          unemployment challenge of the depression?
     2. How could the severity of the depression been avoided through government action?          Could it, or was Canada hostage to external factors?
     3. How unique was Canada's depression experience?

15 February No Tutorials this week – Your Essay is Due!
    Please submit the electronic version via email to me at shawnday [at] mcmaster [dot] ca.
    When submitting, please attach as either a word .doc or as a .txt file - name the file with your last name and student number.
    Submit your paper version at lecture on Monday 13 February. I will be attending lecture for this purpose.

     1. Is it justified to describe the impact of the Second World War on Canada as changing          everything?
     2. How did life change for individual Canadians by the end of the war and the          immediate post-war period?
     3. Was the Canadian government's interment justified based on available information?
     4. Why does the author use the word Evacuation rather than Interment?

8 March Postwar Society and Culture Articles by Strong-Boag and Thompson
     1. The editors chose to put a picture of a Chatelaine cover at the beginning of these          readings. Why?
     2. How could the proliferation of suburban life be characterized as a step backwards for          women?
     3. Canadian everyday life was increasingly dominated by American culture during the           50s and 60s. was this inevitable? Could this have been averted by governmental           actions?

15 March The Quiet Revolution Articles by Rouillard and Jones
     1. Was the so-called Quiet Revolution a product of internal changes in Quebec or          overdue response to external changes and outside influences?
     2. The Quebec language laws were characterized as shaped in response to          encroachment on a distinct culture. Is language the sole determinant of culture and          where did the threat to Quebecois culture come from?

     1. In light of Trudeau's legacy to the Canadian nation, are federalism and nationalism          synonymous terms?

     1. Does a policy of multiculturalism have any hope of success in a modern nation?
     2. Did the treaty with the Nisga in 1998 break new ground or re-affirm existing native          rights in Canada?

 

Tutorial FAQ
What format should I be using for essay citations?
As specified on the course outline, Dr. Azoulay expects you to use K. Turabian's. Information on this format is covered in great detail in her book: A Manual For Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations which is available in the library as well as online at :

Do I submit the essay electronically?
Yes, you submit both a written copy and an electronic copy via email.

What do I do if I am going to be away and unable to attend tutorial?
