Report on Mother Tongue

by Bill Bryson

Good discussion around our Mother Tongue.
It received very solid reception indeed with a spate of 7.5/8s. I am afraid I was middling with 6 to Mike’s 4. What seems to have received most praise was that it could be set aside and returned to with no loss of narrative. Kudos to Jim for the recommendation. Chock full of facts, anecdotes and observances it sparked good discussion around aspects including Australian accents.

Now, Mike, I fear I did a poor job of arguing for Anne Tyler – apologies – and thanks Fergal for your suggestion of A Brief History of Seven Killings. Joe has our next choice: A classic and enduring work – Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder by he inestimable Evelyn Waugh.
