Report on the Narrow Road to the Deep North

by Richard Flanagan

Thanks all for a revolving meeting but good time last Thursday. The general consensus was intriguingly positive for our November read. Although initial difficulties with the novel challenged a couple of us (myself included) I think the general consensus was that the second part of the book was particularly well written and all having read appreciated having so done. Ratings were particularly high with Joe throwing in at 9 and Jim thereabouts as well. Am not sure whether you Mike have finished but would be interested to hear whether the last quarter raised or lowered your score. My own was probably in the 6.5 range and hasten to add that although the gruesome aspects of the book were just that they were also probably the most well-written aspects of the book. Anyone … feel free to add to this.
Our next read is Graham Norton’s latest: ‘The Life and Loves of a He-Devil‘ so chosen to be a lighter, positive holiday read, hopefully easily accomplished allowing for a meeting before Christmas. Having completed now myself can attest that it is lively and light, but satisfying.
