Report on the Casual Vacancy

by JK Rowling

A splendid discussion last week around Casual Vacancy. My only excuse is the madness of the season. As only three in attendance (Jim’s contribution gratefully acknowledged) had completed the book, the discussion was limited to a more general appreciation of the novel and comparison’s with the author’s past works. The general reaction was favourable, with some more favourable than others. We will await some reaction for other’s as they finish. As Jim had contributed in absentia, it was not the most uplifting read, but as all that did persist, will attest, it did seem to be one worth persisting with. I know that I, and I think Joe as well, found that it seemed to improve on reflection. While not an immediate affection, there was something about it that seemed to stick in your mind. perhaps it simply is the author’s ability to capture and share the grittiness of her own experience (pre-Potter). Mike did refer previously to her appearance on Charlie Rose and the short discussion there did help to establish some additional context for the book. A common criticism was the panoply of characters that seemed to distract from the narrative itself (simply trying to keep them straight in one’s own head). Nonetheless, I think a relatively positive reaction in the end. I’d leave it open to Brian to express any lingering thoughts and I know and do want to mention that you found it a little less satisfying in the whole.
The battle with Ulysses continues and there was a brief discussion, as much about how to read and keep going – and folks personal strategies for this one. For my part and I reaffirm, episode 4 was one that I enjoyed the most so far and so we continue to episode 5 for the next meeting.
The book chosen (and I forget who suggested it apologies) is Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Something different but certainly well reviewed.
